I actually completed this several months ago and I’ve been itching like mad to share it. At last I’m finally able to. I’m honored to have had the privilege of creating the poster art for the On Location: Memphis International Film & Music Fest for the past three consecutive years. OL:M is a non-profit dedicating to connecting filmmakers from around the globe, and educating others about film, all here in the Memphis community.
Behind the Design
I explored the Swiss, or International Design style – the pursuit of simplicity and purity. Only two graphic elements were used, along with that simple approach. Both elements together, and separately communicate the items of film and music. The two together create an image of a guitar, the filmstrip acting as the fretboard, and the ink stroke creating the outline of the guitar body. In addition, the two elements also create an abstract “13” in honor of the festival’s 13th year. The type used is Novencento Wide, something simple, crisp, and modern. Keen attention was given to the layout of the text, making sure spacing around and in between was equally proportionate in all instances. A strong contrast in colors was chosen to make it stand out and demand attention. I’m quite proud of it and happy to be able to share it at last. Would love to hear others thoughts/comments on it below.
Usage
The art will be used on all promotional materials for the festival leading up to it in April. In fact, there should be some post cards floating around the Sundance Film Fest over the next few days. It’s already been posted on OL:M’s official website. And if you’re in Memphis, hopefully be seeing more of it around town as our film fest draws near. Mark your calendars! It will be April 19-22.
